Aileen has been a member of the board of the Weingart Foundation since 2013 and served as the board chair from 2019-2023. The foundation provides unrestricted funding to hundreds of non-profit organizations, primarily based in Los Angeles, Riverside, and Orange Counties. During her tenure, the foundation hired a new President and CEO, Miguel Santana, and added three new board members. As part of its focus on listening to the community, the foundation supported two transformative initiatives: No Going Back, which produced a comprehensive plan to reform services in Los Angeles from the view point of many of its no-profit leaders and Bold Vision, which provides youth leaders with an opportunity to set forth their priorities and goals. In addition, the foundation is working hard to help reform the dysfunctional way in which government provides support to the homeless. Another major initiative includes aligning foundation investments with its mission. Often, The Weingart Foundation serves as a leader in the field and is at the forefront of funding major initiatives and encouraging others in philanthropy and government to follow suite, such as in its early funding of Summer Night Lights, the South East Los Angeles Collaborative, Destination Crenshaw, SEED, the Shuttle Endeavor, and the County's Center on Public-Private Partnerships.
As Legal Counsel at the Santa Monica Rape Treatment Center from 1982 to 1993, Aileen worked closely with its founder Gail Abarbanel to provide critical, comprehensives services and advocacy for sexual assault victims of all ages, including:
From 2007 to 2008, Aileen worked with Ambassador Swanee Hunt at Harvard's Women and Public Policy Program to provide leadership training from women leaders from around the world, especially top officials from Liberia. In Liberia, she helped to train judges and lawyers in how to handle sexual assault cases. She also wrote "Women Waging Peace" for the Huffington Post, describing efforts of women around the world to reform security sectors.
As a Vice Provost at the University of Southern California from 2004 to 2006, Aileen created new university partnerships with foundations and international universities; oversaw several major USC initiatives including the universities response to the tsunami, which involved over a dozen international partnerships; and served as the university's fist Director of Arts and Culture Outreach (2007), promoting Los Angeles as a cultural destination and creating opportunities for thousands of USC students to attend diverse plays, museums, and other cultural venues.
